Introduction
The purpose of fins is to propel the diver underwater with
as little effort as possible, thus simplifying movement. Fins
are made of two very different elements: the propulsion blades
and the foot pocket.
There are three main models: the closed
sock covering the heel, open heeled socks which allow for
a better adjustment of the foot and the high socks that are
fastened at the ankle and which are used together with a neoprene
boot. These boots isolate the feet from the cold and allow
for the fins to be comfortably adjusted. There are boots with
or without soles and with or without zippers.

The best fins are those with considerable firmness along the
transversal nerves which act as the vertical stabilizers.
It is also important to consider the width and length of the
blade, given that the movement or rather, the thrust achieved
in the water depends on this, the channels for scooping water
and thrusting it out the back and any vents that reduce movement
resistance.
It is advisable to choose fins that adjust easily to the foot
and which do not have rough or hard spots that can lead to
chafing that would affect foot movements.
Care
and cleaning: In order to keep fins in good condition
it is recommended that they be:
1. Washed with plenty of sweet water after
each dive.
2. Kept in fresh, dry places, out of sunlight.
3. With open heeled fins it is advisable to check on the fin
straps, as this is more fragile and prone to deterioration.
4. If stored in a standing position, against a wall, it is
best to keep the blade at the top so as to avoid deformation.
5. If they are not to be used for a considerable period of
time, it is best to store them with a little talcum powder.
